Following the example of Drake, Lil Wayne kicked off his own annual festival in his hometown of New Orleans last night. The first edition of the Lil WeezyAna Fest had one purpose – raising funds for Weezy’s Tha Carter Fund on the tenth anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina.
As expected, Lil Wayne relied on a handful of guest performers, including a huge amount of local rap stars. He began the concert with a few of his solo cuts, including classics from Tha Carter III and a few mixtape outtakes, before bringing out Gudda Gudda, Dizzy, Kidd Kidd, and Fee Banks for a reunion of the original Sqad Up collective. Tunechi also invited on stage Mack Maine, Curren$y, August Alsina, Jake Troth, Shanell, Cory Gunz, Ms. Tee, Big Freedia, DJ Jubilee, and 5th Ward Webbie.
However, the biggest moment of the night was the highly-anticipated reunion of the Hot Boys. Turk and Juvenile, along with Mannie Fresh, joined Weezy for a medley of late-90s hits like “Bling Bling, “Project B****,” “I Need A Hot Girl” and “Back That Azz Up.” B.G. was missing, because he remains incarcerated, but his mother and son took his place on stage as they held up t-shirts in honor of the rapper.
Another powerful moment during the concert was Wayne bringing out Master P, Mia-X and No Limit. As you know, No Limit and Cash Money beefed for years, but now that there is a rift between Tunechi and Birdman, the rapper doesn’t shy away from showing love to the Master P-helmed label.
Drake was also present and closed out the festival with a medley of “HYFR,” “My Way,” “Back to Back” and “Know Yourself.” However, his performance was not streamed because Apple Music threatened to sue TIDAL for $20 million if they aired it. Read details on this link.
