Dr. Dre’s companion to Straight Outta Compton should go straight into top spot on the U.K. albums chart.
The hip-hip mastermind’s first album in 16 years, Compton: A Soundtrack,
is way out front at No. 1 on the Official Chart Update, and it should
stay there when the chart proper is published later this week.
Indeed, Dre can almost bank on it staying put. The album is currently outselling the rest of theTop 5 combined, according to charts compiler the Official U.K. Charts Company.
If and when Compton hits the top spot, it’ll be Dre’s first U.K. chart-topper. He achieved his best chart effort to-date with his most recent album, 2001, which peaked at No. 4 in 1999.
The U.K.’s albums chart is based on sales of downloads, CDs, vinyl and audio streams and is published Friday.
Dre won’t be basking in the royalties. He’s already announced he’ll donate all proceeds from the album to help fund a new performing arts and entertainment facility for the kids of Compton.
Admittedly, Dre doesn’t need the cash. Following the sale of Beats,
which he co-founded, to Apple for $3 billion, Forbes estimated his
wealth in 2014 at $620 million, easily topping its World's Highest-Paid Musicians list and good enough for the highest amount of cash earned by a musician. Ever.
